Certificates of Waiver or Authorization (COA) Filing

A Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA) is an authorization issued by the Air Traffic Organization to a public operator for a specific UA activity. After a complete application is submitted, FAA conducts a comprehensive operational and technical review.

If necessary, provisions or limitations may be imposed as part of the approval to ensure the UA can operate safely with other airspace users.

Filing a COA becomes necessary if an individual or company wishes to fly a sUAV within restricted airspace, within 10 miles of an international airport, 5 miles of a regional airport or 2 miles of a helipad.

A COA includes the flight plan, vectors of the intended flight and location, activities being performed, and time frame. Moreover, a COA may be required if the flight is to exceed 200ft.
